CONCEPTUAL FICTION
While designing Sinan Terrace, it was aimed to observe the works of the Great Master on the Bosphorus and Üsküdar from a different angle and experience. Besides, the designer and engineering genius of Mimar Sinan constitutes the starting point of structural design.
The structure, with its circular form with a radius of 25 meters, is formed by the combination of a walking platform extending to +12.45 on the sea surface and steel elements with a diameter of 11 cm carrying this platform. While designing the structural elements, it is aimed to be permeable, light in terms of structure and perception in terms of the lightness of the steel elements and their connection details and relations with each other.
Light steel elements come together with a certain rhythm and pattern to create a tulle effect. While creating the geometry of the building, the dome heights of the surrounding historical buildings were taken into account and were designed so as not to exceed these heights. It is aimed to undertake a task in accordance with the identity of the commemoration at Üsküdar Square and the city scale, revealing that he is an innovative designer and a genius engineer.
The small 60m journey from the beginning of the platform to its highest point consists of certain stages.
First Stage-Meditation and Being Alone-Apprenticeship: At this stage, the steels, which are the carriers of the platform, are placed at more frequent intervals, therefore, some isolation from the environment, the first experiences to be gained, the gradually increasing slope and the frequency of the steps, the perception that the later stages of the path to be climbed will be more difficult at this stage. .
Second Phase-Road-Taking-Travelling: At this stage, the field of view has increased relatively with the increase in height and the opening of the gaps. It is felt that you are progressing on the path. The greatest effort is given at this stage.
Stage Three-Arrival to the Peak-Mastery: In this stage, the vision increases with each step, the colors and sounds around become clear, there is no longer an iron curtain that restricts us and exceeds our height. This is the stage where the fruit of all travel is eaten. It is a phase in which all occupancy and emptiness, both on the opposite shores and in the neighborhood, are viewed from a different perspective and better understood and perceived.
The project in the shape of a circle offers the possibility of walking on the urban space, creating a different dimension arising from its geometry, a different sonority that resonates with the environment.
The project allows users who come to the platform to distance themselves from where they are, and to look at the neighborhood from a different and broader point of view.
In the entrance areas of the three unique structures that make up the Sinan Triangle, 25-meter-high pillars have been placed. These illuminated displays are aimed to be placed next to all the works of Sinan the Architect, so that both the works in the "Sinan Triangle" and on the other side of the Bosphorus can be more easily noticed and distinguished from their surroundings. is intended to be provided.
The project reveals itself with the combination of light steel elements that are articulated in three dimensions.
First of all, the philosophical dimension, which seeks perfection in the form of a circle, was designed with dimensions compatible with the social existence of people in the city. The circular platform was created at a ten-degree angle 10m high from the event area so that the Mimar Sinan bazaar, Şemsi Ahmet Pasha and Mihrimah Sultan complexes can be seen. Thus, it offers the opportunity to perceive the silhouette of the district with a calmer mood, away from the noise of the city.
2) The topographical and physical dimensions were designed in three different scales, the urban space scale, the Üsküdar neighborhood scale, and the common use scale, in order to eliminate the historical-current tension of the district.
At the scale of the urban space, the circular platform and the steel carrier pillars in the form of tulle are seen from the Bosphorus in harmony with the existing structures.
It has a symbolic approach that will merge with the “Sinan Triangle” at the district scale. The platform, which will be located in the recently established fill area above the sea, chooses a position that will not dominate over the structure that currently extends to the strait.
An amphitheater rising on a floor arranged with « opus sectile » symbols, opening to the sea in a way to be open to various forms of use, was designed on a communal scale. On the west side of the square, an exhibition space devoted to the works of Mimar Sinan appears towards the library next to the Şemsi Pasha Complex. It continues the circular view in the general logic of the project. This Exhibition venue has the feature of being a pavilion that will host permanent and temporary exhibitions, not only in this area, but also in areas adjacent to all Sinan structures throughout Istanbul with its detachable structure.
3) There is a historical dimension to be added to these three scales. This dimension primarily focuses on the forgotten role of water in the historical background of the district. Therefore, we designed our project in the place where sea baths were located above the water in the past. Structurally, the columns are reminiscent of Üsküdar's sea baths built on piles in the past.
one
Sinan Terrace ; Uskudar Square and the Sinan buildings on the Bosphorus with a wide panorama.
2nd
When viewed from the Bosphorus front, Sinan Terrace connects to the beach as transparent and delicate as possible without limiting visual communication with the buildings in Üsküdar Square.
3
Memorial Area; It was created as an amphitheater in the center of the observation terrace, and it was aimed to be used for cultural, commemorative and gathering purposes with a certain number of participants. Larger events are planned to be held in the event area at the entrance of the memorial area.
Mimar Sinan and His Period Pavilion; It consists of temporary and permanent exhibition units with information and visuals about the works of Mimar Sinan and his contemporaries in 16th century Europe and Ottoman Geography. In this context, it is aimed to serve in all squares of Istanbul, large and small.
COASTAL STRATEGY
In the historical panorama, it is seen that the square has been expanded with filling areas from the beginning of the 20th century to the present in order to create more usage areas. Although our project proposes a new geometry for the coastline, it is not appropriate to carry out a wide filling process as in the approved municipality project, especially in order to preserve the waterfront property of the Şemsipaşa Library structure. For this reason, it is suggested that this part of the coast should remain as a narrow passage.
In addition, it was aimed to strengthen the relationship between users and the Bosphorus on the coastline where the Memorial Area is located, so the square was gradually lowered to sea level with terraces. In this way, the relationship between water and the user was strengthened.
POTENTIAL SQUARES-PEDESTRIAN AND VEHICLE TRAFFIC INTENSITY-PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TRANSFER NETWORK-THROAT AXIS GREEN AREAS- PROJECT AREA
The Sinan Triangle contains potential large and small gaps. Especially the Mimar Sinan Bazaar - Fish Market - Ferry Pier Axis, where the biggest pedestrian traffic is experienced, has a character that sometimes narrows and sometimes expands and turns into small squares. Although these limited sized areas have the potential to be transformed into a memorial area, it is not the most convenient area in the 'Triangle' to construct the Mimar Sinan Memorial Area. Subway exits-patterns of sea, land and pedestrian roads throughout the square When examined, it is aimed to construct an area where both commemoration and potential cultural and artistic activities can be held with sufficient number of visitors, where the whole city is perceived, which can be arranged without any obstacle between it and the Bosphorus, next to all these axes but not intersecting with them. The coastal area in between was chosen as the project area.
The green line on the shoreline stretching from the Bosphorus to Salaçağa is cut at Süküdar Square. The aim of the project is to ensure the continuity of this green line.
GREEN Aisle
It is aimed to ensure the continuity of the green band on the coast line. In this direction, broad-leaved trees that will provide shade were used in the area, and sitting and resting areas were placed in these areas.
The trees to be located in the area are placed in concrete pots placed flush with the ground.
